Oklahoma 2006 Calendar

[Oklahoma calendar]

I have just discovered this wonderful Wild & Scenic Oklahoma 2006 Calendar, by BrownTrout Publishers. BrownTrout is probably the largest publisher of calendars in the world, with over 900 different titles available for the year 2006. An excerpt from the publisher’s site:

Life on the plains of Oklahoma is hardly, if ever, dull. In the summer when dramatic storms come blowing in from the west to accentuate the beautiful landscape, the Sooner State somehow seems blessed and on edge all at the same time. With canyon bluffs overlooking ancient mesas, limestone cliffs, and crystal clear lakes, Oklahoma offers an exciting range of wonderful vistas. Adding to the beauty of this legendary land are wild blue sage and grounds sacred to the Choctaw tribe.

[Martin Luther King]

Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. A Baptist Preacher and American Civil Rights leader, he preached non-violence and worked to bring about social, political and economic equality for citizens of all races.

In 1963, in Washinghton D.C., he delivered one of his most memorable speeches: “I have a dream … that one day little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers”.

He was awarded the Nobel prize for Peace in 1964, for leading his struggle for equality through non-violence.

Martin Luther King was assassinated on April 4, 1968. Each year on the third Monday of January the U.S. celebrate the birth, the life and the dream of Martin Luther King.

The Oklahoma rose

[Oklahoma Rose]

The Oklahoma rose is a hybrid tea rose, developed in 1964 at Oklahoma State University. It’s one of the most fragrant of hybrid teas, and the darkest of the reds. Its long pointed buds open into huge, fully double blooms with wonderfully strong and sweet old rose perfume. The bushy plant is covered with leathery, dark green foliage.

The Oklahoma rose was declared the official state flower of Oklahoma in 2004. Oklahoma had already adopted the mistletoe as the official floral emblem in 1893, and the Indian blanket as the official state wild flower in 1910.

The Oklahoma rose photo is courtesy of Just Joey’s Roses; they sell own root, not grafted roses, guaranteed to be free from the RMV, the Rose Mosaic Virus.
