Memorial Day

May 28th, 2006

[Memorial Day]

Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May, while May 30 was its traditional day of observance since 1868.

Formerly known as Decoration Day, this holiday commemorates the hundreds of thousands U.S. soldiers who died during the American Civil War, and those who died in any war or military action.

Many people observe this holiday by visiting cemeteries and memorials. In addition to remembrance, Memorial Day is also a time for picnics, family gatherings, and sporting events. A long standing tradition is the running of the Indy 500 car race, which has been held in conjunction with Memorial Day since 1911.

Much more information about the history and traditions of Memorial Day is available on Wikipedia, and on The History Channel web site.
